Legal Assistant (On-site)
Job Description
Our client is seeking qualified Legal Assistants to support their Central Records Unit. This position involves reviewing, researching, and responding to Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain knowledge of relevant laws and agency policies, including Public Officers Law sections 66a and 87, Criminal Procedure Law sections 160 and 725, Family Court Act sections 375 and 381, and other statutes governing the release of agency records.
- Manage all aspects of the FOIL request process, from receipt to final agency response, including researching prior FOIL or POL 66a requests in the OPEN FOIL database.
- Coordinate with various internal departments to identify and retrieve applicable records.
- Utilize internal systems to gather necessary records in response to FOIL requests.
- Act as a liaison with courts, public entities, and state, county, and local agencies to obtain information relevant to FOIL requests.
- Collaborate with legal counsel and other legal entities as required.
- Prepare correspondence and documentation according to agency policy and applicable statutes, ensuring all materials are reviewed by a supervisor prior to release.
Qualifications:
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret laws, legal documents, and other written materials.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Previous experience working in a legal or records management environment is preferred.
