This position plays a critical role in planning and directing engineering assignments, interpreting technical requirements, organizing project execution, and coordinating design deliverables throughout the full project life cycle.

This role demands a proven leader with deep technical knowledge, the ability to integrate diverse engineering functions, and a commitment to the LANL mission of national security, scientific excellence, and operational safety.

  • Interpret technical requirements, organize engineering tasks, and ensure coordinated execution across design, procurement, and construction interfaces.
  • Provide engineering oversight for design development, constructability reviews, and technical problem resolution.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams to develop design criteria, specifications, and technical documentation in alignment with DOE directives and LANL Engineering Standards.
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables to verify conformance with project scope, schedule, cost, and safety objectives.
  • Support risk management, change control, and configuration management processes.
  • Collaborate with project management, procurement, and construction to ensure seamless project execution and compliance with established baselines.
  • Mentor and provide technical direction to engineering staff, promoting continuous improvement and professional growth.

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university required.
  • 15+ years' experience
  • Advanced degree preferred (M.S. in Engineering or Engineering Management).
  • Progressive, hands-on experience in engineering project execution and design supervision, preferably within DOE, defense, or large industrial/construction environments.
  • Experience may include project design engineering, startup, field engineering, or plant operations in complex facilities such as utilities, process plants, or research laboratories.
  • Prior supervisory or team-lead experience overseeing multidisciplinary engineering efforts.
  • Strong knowledge of DOE Orders, NQA-1 requirements, and LANL Engineering Standards Manual.
  • Proficiency with engineering design and project management software (AutoCAD, Revit, Primavera P6, MS Project).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Experience with DOE O 413.3B (Program and Project Management for the Acquisition of Capital Assets).
  • Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM), Configuration Management, and Quality Assurance programs.
  • Demonstrated leadership in technically rigorous, safety-critical environments.
  • Active DOE "Q” or DOD Top Secret clearance (preferred, not required).
