Legal Assistant (Hybrid) Spanish language
Job Description
Our client is seeking a Legal Assistant 1 with Spanish language skills to support intake functions within a government labor bureau. The successful candidate will play a critical role in handling employment-related complaints, particularly under the newly enacted New York State Freelance Isn’t Free Act (FIFA). This position requires strong analytical skills, independent judgment, and a solid understanding of employment laws.
- Manage intake of employment-related complaints
- Review and analyze complaints under FIFA, which protects freelance workers statewide
- Apply intake protocols to screen and process cases
- Use sound discretion to resolve complaints or assign to attorneys
- Ensure timely and appropriate routing of matters based on content and complexity
- Communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking complainants and parties
- Interpret and apply relevant State and federal employment laws
- Maintain accurate records and document complaint resolutions
- Follow internal procedures and legal guidelines consistently
- Collaborate with legal staff and provide support on investigative matters
- Conduct initial assessments to determine legal merit
- Prepare summaries and memos for attorneys
- Track and monitor case progress
- Draft routine correspondence in English and Spanish
- Support enforcement of legal remedies such as restitution or penalties under FIFA
Required Education and Skills:
- Certificate or technical degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant studies
- Fluency in Spanish and English
- Ability to interpret and apply legal rules and procedures
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Prior experience in employment law, legal intake, or public service preferred
